As of August, 2017 progress has been steady at Ilisu. The dam is near completion and the valley is set to be flooded soon. Recently, a cylindrical tomb in the shape of a tower, dating back to the 15th century has been moved out of harm’s way. However, most historical sites in the valley will be submerged and lost forever. Those who call the Tigris home will be relocated to industrial cities and high-rise projects in the surrounding area effectively tearing the communities apart and drastically changing the course of history, lifestyle, and relationships of the mainly Kurdish population between Hasankyef and Ilisu on the Tigris river.
